THIS.
UC tuition is going up by 16% a year until I graduate. Right now I pay $12k a year for tuition, on top of books, room/board, food, books, and other living expenses which equals to about $25-30k a year. By the time I graduate it’s going to cost $22k for tuition alone, but by then, I’ll probably be living at home and commuting like everyone else, but the books and other expenses will make things pretty difficult. Unlike my suitemates who come from wealthy, dual parent income families, I don’t, so I’m going to have to figure this out without financial aid.
Even though I think occupy protests are impractical and directly useless, they are important for sending a message out to the wider public and bringing media attention to not only the income inequality, but for campus specific protests, the tuition hikes in the face of the disproportionately rising wealth of certain people and money mismanagement by local, state, and the federal government. Occupy protests might be generally small and sometimes irrational, but it’s shit like this that gives occupy some of my support.
